Stara Zagora Gas Station Hit in Late-Night Robbery, Suspect Caught
In a startling incident that unfolded around 1 o'clock last night, an armed robbery jolted a gas station located at the Stara Zagora exit in the direction of Kazanlak
22-year-old Bulgarian, Todor Nikolov, and 27-year-old Spanish national, Christian Velasko, will remain behind bars.
The decision was made by the Plovdiv Regional Court.
The two are tried for armed robbery committed on April 28 in a Plovdiv jewelry store. Nikolov and Velasko, allegedely, threatened the owners with a gas pistol and a knife and took off with jewelry worth BGN 35 000.
The owners, brothers, Detelin and Dimitar Nedevi chased them on foot. A brawl occurred during which shots were fired with the gas pistol and one of the owners was slightly injured.
Nikolov told the magistrates that he has not graduated from high school and is unemployed, explaining the crime with the fact that he is a drug addict and needed money. Nikolov has a criminal record, a drug related suspended sentence and a 3-year probation.
The Spaniard, a Barcelona resident, also apologized for the act. He stated he was in Bulgaria to work and to marry Nikolov's sister, adding he was never paid for the job he had done and was forced to steel to support himself. Velasko offered the Court to do community service work in exchange for a suspended jail sentence.
The Bulgarian law provides for penalty of 15 years to life behind bars for similar crimes.
