A couple of hundred young anarchists staged a May Day (May 1, Labor Day) rally on Garibaldi Square in Sofia leading to minor clashes with police.

The far-left and anarchist-minded youth waved red and black flags and shouted anti-capitalist slogans in the downtown of Bulgaria's capital.

The organizers of the protest rally are from the May 1 Action Committee. They have said that people from various leftist and anarchist groups were partaking in the protest but they did not want to mention them as it was the May Day holiday that was important.

The organizers have told the Bulgarian BGNES news agency that only in December 2008 15 000 Bulgarian workers had been laid off, and that another 60 000-80 000 workers would be made redundant by mid 2009.

They have also pointed out that half of all workers in Bulgaria's textile industry, or some 75 000 people, are in danger of becoming unemployed.

"Bulgarian Socialist Party is a capitalist party which does not protect the rights of the laborers", the organizers have pointed out regarding the largest party in Bulgaria's ruling three-way coalition.

The anti-capitalist May Day rally in Sofia was guarded by heavily armed police and gendarmerie units.
