Sofia Mayor, Boyko Borisov, has suggested that he will bring in a life sentence for kidnappers who ask for ransom money, if he becomes Bulgaria PM this summer.

Unofficial GERB leader Borisov was commenting on the recent spate of kidnappings in Bulgaria, the latest of which is ongoing with 64-year-old Bulgarian businessman Vene Sotirov in the hands of unknown criminals.

Borisov announced that kidnappers need to know that they will face the harshest punishment possible, he therefore promised to make a proposal for the law to be changed if he becomes Bulgarian PM in this summer's general elections.

Borisov also promised to change Good Friday into an official public holiday in Bulgaria, saying that Bulgarian Christians believe that "on Good Friday, we shouldn't touch anything, or work".

He was speaking at the completion of the road repairs between Sofia's Bul. Alexander Stamboliski and Bul. Todor Alexandrov. Borisov also announced that the Sofia metro section between Mladost 1 neighborhood and the Unak stadium will be officially opened on 8 May 2009.
