Pirates have attacked another US merchant ship off the coast of Somalia midday Tuesday, local time, BBC reported.

After coming under fire, the ship immediately requested assistance from the USS Bainbridge, the American warship involved in the rescue of a US captain seized last week.

The Liberty Sun had been en route to Mombasa from Houston, Texas, when the assault took place. Owners of the Liberty Sun and the US military confirmed reports of the latest hit.

Pirates have used rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons to attack the merchant ship, which sustained some damage, but was able to resume its journey to Mombasa. The pirates were not able to board the ship and none of the sailors is reported as injured.

This is the second attack on a US ship in just one week near the Somali coast. The Sunday operation to free Captain Richard Phillips, who was held captive in a lifeboat for five days, ended with three pirates being shot dead by sharpshooters from the USS Bainbridge.
