Bulgaria's historically close relations with Russia might turn out to be detrimental for the chances of the former Bulgarian Foreign Minister Solomon Passy to become NATO's next Secretary-General, the German information agency DPA says in an article.
DPA reviews several bidders for the top NATO opening pointing out that a candidate's good relations with the USA and the knowledge of French were the main prerequisites for obtaining the post.
According to DPA, Passy is well-received in the USA, and comes from the new, Eastern European states of the pact, who believe the next NATO Secretary-General should be a representative of theirs.
The article stresses that Passy was a mathematician and a rational thinker, who also appeared to be romantic as he just married Bulgaria's EU Affairs Minister, Gergana Grancharova, on St. Valentine's Day.
