A renown human right activist and a 9/11 widow are among those killed in a plane crash near Buffalo, New York, Thursday night, BBC reports.

Alison Des Forges - a writer and human rights expert on Rwanda - was among the 50 victims, New York Governor David Patterson informed. The 66-year-old Des Forges, had dedicated her life to studying Rwanda and authored a research on the 1994 genocide in the country. Des Forges has been an expert witness in 11 international genocide trails.

Beverly Eckert, the widow of a victim of the 9/11 attacks, who later became a campaigner on security issues was also among those on board.

President Barack Obama issued a statement saying that he was "deeply saddened" by the news, calling Eckert "an inspiration to me and so many others".

In the mean time, authorities announced that analysis of data recorders recovered from the scene shows the plane made a series of severe pitches and rolls seconds before plunging into a house. The crew of a plane noticed "significant ice build-up" on its wings before it crashed, investigators say.

The twin-prop Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, operated by Colgan Air for Continental Airlines, was flying from Newark airport in New Jersey to Buffalo Niagara International Airport and was minutes from Buffalo airport when it crashed Thursday night killing 50 people - 44 passengers, 4 crew and 1 off-duty pilot on board, and one person on the ground.

Officials say the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
