Zimbabwe's opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in Wednesday as the country's new Prime Minister at a ceremony in the capital Harare, the BBC reported.

The oath was administered by the Zimbabwe President and long-time political opponent of Tsvangirai, Robert Mugabe, who has agreed on a power-sharing deal with the leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

Zimbabwe was torn by political violence after March 2007 as Tsvangirai won the first round of the Presidential elections. The power-sharing deal with the 84-year-old Mugabe, who has been ruling the country since its independence from the UK in 1984, was reached in January 2009.

Zimbabwe's new Prime Minister vowed to stabilize the country politically and economically.
