Student's from the "Dimitar Blagoev" High school in the Bulgarian city of Veliko Turnovo have begun copying the text of the Turnovo Constitution, Bulgarian information agencies report.

The initiative is dedicated to 130th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution in Veliko Turnovo by the Constituent National Assembly. The idea came from the Student History Club in the city and is supported by the Regional Historical Museum, the Regional Education Inspectorate and the municipal "Education" and "Culture" departments.

The copying began at 12:30 pm on Monday and will end on April 16, the date of the Constitution's ratification.

After the project's completion, the copy will become the second Bulgarian historical document with a contemporary text version. Several years ago, a copy of the "Slavic-Bulgarian History" of Paisii Hilendarski (of Hilendar) was also produced in Veliko Turnovo. The copy is kept at the Regional History Museum in the city.

After Bulgaria regained its independence from the Ottoman Empire, the first National Assembly convened in Veliko Turnovo in April of 1879 to ratify the State's first Constitution, known as the Turnovo Constitution. The Constitution was ratified on April 16 1879, and the Bulgarian Parliament was transferred from the old capital Turnovgrad to Sofia, which became the capital of the country.
