The construction of the Nabucco gas transit pipeline will get a EUR 250 M boost from the EC, which is about 3% of its total cost. Map by wikipedia.org
The European Commission announced Wednesday its approval of the energy project, that will give Bulgaria and Greece EUR 20 M for a gas connection between Haskovo in Bulgaria and Komotini in Greece.
This is the first project on Bulgarian soil that has been funded by the EC, from an overall fund of EUR 3,5 B, which was set up to increase 'energy security' in Europe, reported BGNES.
Bulgaria and Slovakia, the most affected countries by the recent gas crisis, are strangely set to receive the smallest part of the 'energy security' money. The spokesman for the EC explained that one of the criteria for the funding allocations was the level of readiness to start the project this year, of the separate countries.
EUR 250 M is also stipulated for the building of the "Nabucco" pipeline, which will also transit Bulgarian territory.
The "Nabucco" pipeline is a planned natural gas pipeline that will transport gas from Turkey to Austria, via Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. This 3 300 km pipeline is a diversion from the current methods of importing natural gas primarily from Russia. The project is backed by some of the EU states and the US.
