Israeli military aircraft have targeted smuggling tunnels on the Gaza Strip's border with Isreal early on Wednesday, the BBC reported.
The airstrikes were in response to Tuesday's assault on an Israeli border patrol which killed one Israeli soldier and wounded three putting a strain on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire declared on January 17 and 18 by both sides respectively.
No casualties have been reported from the Israeli bombing of the border tunnels through which Israel believes Hamas and other Gaza militant groups got weapons and other supplies.
Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has threatened an escalation of the Israeli response to Tuesday's assault, which happened just as the new US envoy George Mitchell appointed by President Barack Obama to further the Israel-Hamas ceasefire is about to arrive in Israel and Palestine.
