Ten Killed in Avalanche in Turkey

At least 10 hikers were killed Sunday in an avalanche in northeastern Turkey, CNN reports.

Rescue efforts are continuing at the Turkish mountain resort of Zigana, where rescue workers pulled out 7 people alive from under the snow. At least two of the survivors have been hospitalized.

The Zigana resort is about 30 km away from the Turkish city of of Gumushane.

The victims are reported to have been part of a group of avid hikers, frequently climbing the mountains. The incident has taken place at 2,200 m above sea level where the avalanche has taken the hikers by surprise.

Rescuers and specialists think that the rising temperatures may have increased the risk for avalanches in the area. Avalanches are most commonly caused by a weak layer of snow on a slope covered by solid layers.
