The Bulgarian member of the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin was part of an official delegation of the Party of European Socialists which met Thursday with Turkey's Prime Minister Erdogan over the Nabucco gas transit pipeline.

The Chair of the PES group at the European Parliament Martin Schultz and his two deputies Vigenin and Jan Marius Viersma also met in Ankara with Turkey's President Abdullah Gul and the Foreign Minister Ali Babacan.

The Turkish PM Erdogan told the MEPs that Turkey was interested in the realization of the Nabucco project and that it was ready to cooperate to make it happen.
"This project cannot be realized without Turkey's active participation. In light of the gas conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, the potential role that Turkey can play for the stability of the gas supplies for Europe became explicitly clear", the Bulgarian MEP Vigenin said after the meeting.
During the talks, Martin Schultz confirmed that the PES Group supported Turkey's EU accession, and was against the introduction of additional conditions for its membership. He did point out, though, that the country had a lot of work in order to meet EU standards in human rights, media freedom, and trade union rights.

Vigenin said the Turkish PM Erdogan had confirmed that his country was in constant contact with all sides in the Middle East Peace Process including Hamas, and was actively engaged in mediating efforts in the region.
