In his Inauguration Address Tuesday, the first African-American President of the USA Barack Obama declared that America understood greatness was never given, and that it must be earned.
Drawing upon the historical experience of the USA, Obama praised the American spirit of risk-taking, doing, and achieving things, and called upon all Americans to reaffirm their sense of unity and mission in the face of the present crisis in the economy, and the war that the country was facing.
"This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. ... Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions -- that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America", the forty-fourth President of the United States declared in his first speech after assuming the highest office in the country.
Obama reaffirmed the image of contemporary Americans as the keepers of a historical legacy entailing an unwavering will to withstand any challenges and threats. The President emphasized America's diversity as a strength, rather than a weakness.
Barack Obama concluded his address with a quote by America's first President George Washington, who in 1776 was the commander of the revolutionary forces, stating that the new nation had come together in the time of great danger, and had met it.
