The killer of Bulgarian writer Georgi Stoev has been arrested along with an accomplice, an investigative report of the Darik radio has discovered.

Stoev, who was widely popular with his books, telling the stories of notorious Bulgarian crime bosses, was shot in the head in front of Sofia's Pliska Hotel in broad daylight on April 7, 2008.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing two shooters attacking Stoev and running away on foot.

The two alleged killers have been detained for 24 hours, only to be released without being charged with any crime, according to the Darik radio report.

The city Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov explained for the investigative journalist that the suspected killers were let go due to lack of evidence since none of the eyewitnesses recognized and identified them.

A phone call from one of the alleged assailants to Georgi Stoev has been intercepted minutes before the shooting. Their cell phones have both been located in the same cell at the time of the crime - near the Pliska Hotel. While Police were arresting one of the killers, his accomplice managed to escape through the roof of his apartment building. After realizing that his partner has not been recognized and was out of danger, he reappeared and turned himself in.

Some anonymous sources have said that the two were members of the crime group of notorious underworld boss Zlatomir Ivanov AKA Zlatko Baretata (The Beret).
