Gas Dispute Leaves Europe without Russian Gas Supply

Bulgaria in EU | January 7, 2009, Wednesday

Supplies of Russian gas to Europe via the Ukraine have been terminated, the spokesperson of the European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs reported.

On Tuesday, the Czech EU Presidency and the European Commission demanded that gas supplies be restored immediately to the EU and that the two parties resume negotiations.

Austria has announced that gas supply was terminated and the country gas storage reserves would be sufficient for three months.

Russian gas supplies to the Czech Republic have been discontinued on Tuesday evening, Czech information agencies report, however, the country has undertaken the necessary measures and has secured gas import from Norway.

The Romanian "Transgas" announced Wednesday morning that all gas supplies to Romania have been terminated.

Russian gas supply to Serbia was also put on hold on Tuesday evening with all consumers in the country asked to save natural gas and use alternative energy sources when possible. Serbian government states that they have included in the emergency measures the use of fuel oil and additional import of electric power.

Slovenia is also without Russian gas. The country has reserves that could cover the needs for up to two weeks, the Chair of the local energy company stated.

Earlier on Tuesday supplies to Bulgaria and gas transit through the country to Turkey, Greece and Macedonia were also terminated as well as supplies of Russian gas to Bosnia, Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovakia.

Germany is experiencing interruptions in the natural gas supply, but the Germany energy company announced that they had enough reserves to guarantee supplies during the winter months. The main problem has been shifting the gas supply from Norway to consumers in Southern Germany, which has been resolved in the course of one day.
