Bulgaria, Ukraine Presidents Agree Independent Monitoring of Gas Transit Needed

Politics | January 6, 2009, Tuesday // 00:00

Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov spoke on the phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yushchenko Tuesday night dicsussing Tuesday's cutting off of Russian natural gas supplies for the Balkans.

Both Presidents agreed that the conflicting data about the Russian supplies presented by Russia and the Ukraine justified the need for independent monitoring at the gas dispatching points.

Parvanov told Yushchenko that Bulgaria was in the most unfavorable position of all other affected countries because it did not have alternative natural gas providers and had negligible reserves of its own.

The Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko promised to try to influence the Naftogaz company in order to contribute for the resuming of the natural gas supplies to Bulgaria.

During the phone call, Yushchenko also confirmed his participation in the energy summit organized in April 2009 in Sofia by the Bulgarian government, entitled "Natural Gas for Europe - Security and Partnership".
