A police officer from a riot squad guarding Greece's Ministry of Culture has been shot early Monday morning with Kalashnikov machine guns in an attack by two unknown man, the BBC reported citing Greek officials.

The wounded riot policeman was hit by two bullets, one in the chest, and one in the leg, and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

According to the police, at least 20 shots were fired at the police squad. A number of people have been detained for interrogation, and the Athens police are investigating whether the Kalashnikov guns from Monday's attack were the same as the ones used in another attack on a riot police bus in late December when no policemen were hurt.

After the murder of the Athens teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos in early December by a police bullet, Greece has seen as wave of streets riots, and attacks on police forces by anarchists have become a regular occurrence.
