Israeli troops have launched a ground operation in the northern part of the Gaza strip Saturday night, the BBC reported.
The invading forces consist of a small column of 10-15 military vehicles and infantry backed by assault helicopters, which is believed to be a vanguard to a larger force as thousands of Israeli troops and tanks are reported to have been amassed on Gaza's borders.
The ground invasion comes a week after Israel started air strikes on the enclave in response to the firing of rockets into its territory by Hamas militants. Earlier on Saturday, Israel's artillery started firing shells into open territories in Gaza.
The spokesman of the Israeli military Maj Avital Leibovich has warned the attack would take "many long days". She said the Israeli Army's objective was to destroy the Hamas terror infrastructure, and that this was not the start of a reoccupation of Gaza.
