Gazprom: Ukraine Gives No Relevant Response

World | January 3, 2009, Saturday // 00:00

The Deputy Director of the Russian natural gas monopoly Gazprom Alexander Medvedev said Saturday in Prague the talks on gas prices with the Ukraine could not be restarted because the Ukrainians were giving "no relevant response".

Russia has accused Ukraine of stealing gas bound for Europe from pipelines which cross the country, Euronews reported. According to Medvedev, Ukraine's gas giant Naftogaz was stealing 35 million cubic metres of Russian gas destined for Europe every day. The Ukrainian side has responded that Gazprom itself had reduced its deliveries for Europe.

Romania, Hungary and Poland have reported drops of about 30% in supply, according to Euronews. Bulgaria has also reported a 10-15% fall, and have said Turkey, Greece and Macedonia, which rely on Bulgarian transit routes, were also being affected.
