Journalist Beaten up in Bulgaria's Black Sea Town of Shabla

Crime | December 29, 2008, Monday // 00:00

The sports journalist Kaloyan Minkov from the Varna regional newspaper "Cherno More" ("Black Sea") was beaten up in the northeast town of Shabla early Sunday morning.

According to his own testimonies, Minkov and his brother were beaten by several men in front of the Port disco in the Black Sea town of Shabla. The owner of the disco Kostadin Stoyanov was also allegedly among the attackers.

Minkov claims he had not provoked the violence against him in any way. The disco club owner Stoyanov, however, has declared before the police that the journalist and his brother were drunk and had started the fight in a cafe in front of the disco.

According to Stoyanov, his son Kristiyan, who is a bouncer at the disco, was attacked by the two brothers, and he intervened in order to help him.

The Dobrich District Police is investigating the case, and it is still unclear whether Minkov had been targeted in his capacity as a journalist, or whether the incident had other causes.
