Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has slammed at some media outlets for their coverage of the migrant crisis.
"I think some of the media outlets are doing the wrong thing by going to refugees and asking them why they aren't going through Bulgaria. I don't understand what kind of an instigation policy this is," 24 Chasa mass-circulation daily quotes him as saying after the closure of the Western Balkans migrant route.
Earlier this week, agreements were reached at the EU-Turkey summit that virtually led to the closure of the route. Subsequently, Macedonia announced it would seal its border to migrants, after already having imposed restrictions for days.
Unlike Macedonia and Greece, Bulgaria is not sitting on a major route used by migrants to cross into Europe. Reports by human rights organizations have linked this to many examples of beating and pushbacks of migrants allegedly done by Bulgarian border police at the frontier with Turkey, while the government claims its anti-smuggling efforts and stepped up border security have discouraged migrants from trying to use Bulgaria to cross into the EU.
Borisov added he felt sorry and his heart broke every time he saw refugee camps at the Macedonia-Greece border being flooded, but was aware they should be told to return to their homes....
The media are just doing what their bosses are telling them to - and now that other countries are pulling up the drawbridge, migrants are to be redirected to Bulgaria - which is why the seed is being planted in the minds of migrants by the media that they should be coming here. The worry is that the idea may be getting discussed in parliament because the EU is offering money to take them. However, once they have all been dumped here and we cannot get rid of them (because of their human rights) the money will most likely be withdrawn - and then we will suffer in the same way that western european countries do - and our women and children will suffer the most
I'm feeling very anxious that BG and most of the other EU countries are just going to accept this preposterous plan laying down. There is only one week to go before they have their March 17/18 meeting in Brussels when the leaders get to vote, but the citizens just have to cop the mass stupidity. The only opposition I've heard so far is from Hungary and Austria. It's just not enough time to think this through properly and thoroughly, and Shmerkel seems to want to rush the whole idiotic scam in as quick as possible. BB seems very resigned to the fact, as he said yesterday, "it's the best compromise". Bollocks to that! From what I've been reading, the general consensus of citizens everywhere, is of sheer horror; in that the EU is allowing Turkey to blackmail us and to be giving Turkey the keys to Europe, and a vast amount of money, without any qualms about it. It's too insane. I'm not in BG at the moment, so I don't know what the local media coverage about all this shite is. Is it a hot topic on tv and radio?
