Commenting article: Pope Francis, Russian Patriach Call for Christian Unity in Historic Meeting

Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriach Kirill called for restoring Christian unity and preserving the traditions of Christianity in a historic meeting held in Cuba on Friday.

In a joint declaration, they called on the world to protect Christians from persecution in the Middle East.

Catholic church is independent from any nation, holding its own hierarchy. But one cannot say the same about the orthodox churches which are autocephalic by nature thus being prone to political influence. Nevertheless, joint risks should help to cooperate. Besides, Ukraine is not catholic, it is, and always was, only orthodox. The difference is that eastern Ukraine respects the Moscow patriarch, and the western - catholic Pope. This fine solutions was introduced by Poles in 16 century to keep Ukraine bound to western Europe while not infringing upon their orthodox tradition and doctrine.
