There are no Bulgarians, only "Macedonians", in Bulgaria, according to a propaganda article in a Macedonian newspaper that appears to stretch the boundaries of sanity.
The article in the Macedonian daily "Vecer", entitled "There Is Anything But Bulgarians in Bulgaria", is authored by Todor Petrov, the chairman of the so called "World Macedonian Congress", an ultranationalist Macedonian NGO, close to the ruling Macedonian party VMRO-DPMNE of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.
"Only the gypsies and the Turks in Bulgaria are not Macedonians. The question is not whether the Macedonians in Macedonia are Bulgarians but whether there are Bulgarians in Bulgaria without Macedonian roots," states the highly perplexing text of Todor Petrov....
IMHO and due to strong historical evidence, Bulgarians are primarily Thracians.
As such they are tied to the Greeks and Italians as ancient people of the Mediterranean with DNA evidence to match.
The Slavs were a much later entry into the local scene and have absolutely no connection to the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia.
Therefore it's absurd for Bulgaria to fall into these false comparisons. You are Thracians and we have known you for 4000 years which also establishes your historical claim aroud them parts.
We have ancient Thracian traditions still in practise, true, somewhat related to them, but modern Bulgarians foundation was in 1st medieval bulgarian kingdom, not in some long-gone antique thracian kingdom.
And nobody can even speak Thracian language.
I know it's a bit rich for me trying to teach your history but this is what I know:
According to some 20th-century researchers as William Z. Ripley, Carleton S. Coon and Bertil Lundman the Bulgarians are predominantly Mediterranean people, with unexplained Pre-Pontic, Alpine, and Nordic strains, whose roots go back to the Neolithic. Bulgarian DNA profile is congruent with those described for most European populations. Among the prehistoric events marked by the observed haplogroups, the greatest contribution comes from the range expansion of local Mesolithic foragers. The Bulgarian gene pool also bears signals of the recolonization from different glacial refugia and the spread of agriculture (and farmers) from the Near East. As for the interpopulation analysis of Y-DNA, similarly to mtDNA, Bulgarians belong to the cluster of European populations, still being slightly distant from them. Analyses shows that almost the entire Bulgarian mtDNA pool is made up of West Eurasian lineages; the Mediterranean contribution could be attributed to the Thracians, while the Eastern contribution could be attributed to the Bulgars and Slavs.
