Criminals, sentenced to up to one year in jail, will have a chance to buy their freedom. This is what a new Punishment law set forward by the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice envisages. It is not yet clear what the price of every remitted day in prison would be.
Each separate judge will be able to decide when to allow the new law to be enforced. A possible reason for example is to keep the criminal from being separated from their relatives, who they take care of.
Usually, a sentence of up to one year is given for theft or appropriation the Bulgarian Judges Union explained. According to them, the idea of buying is "very strange". It is also predicted that the new law will expand the possibility of suspended sentences and pre-term release from prison....
