"I am simply too conservative for modern liberals of either party."

I doubt very much you are any more conservative than myself. It is not possible. If you are the most conservative person alive in Germany you would still be too liberal for my taste. Europeans don't know what it means to be conservative.

Black Sea energy conference? Is Croatia on the Black Sea? It doesn't look like a working meeting set up to accomplish anything.

"Nobody represents my views, and I won't vote for anyone who doesn't."

Your views may be difficult to represent. You are an American living in Germany. There aren't many of you around. Even if you vote in the US, it doesn't affect your life style because you are living in Germany. If you are a taxpayer in the US you should vote for either big government spending and high taxes (Dem.) or less government and lower taxes (Rep.)

People have to care about politics for democracy to work. If you don't care and don't vote, you will not be represented. Those vocal minorities who do care get disproportionately heavy representation. When this happens and the country where you reside takes a turn for the worse, you have no one but yourself to blame.

The financial crisis is a bit different, but all this oversupply of housing was made possible by easy and cheap credit. Builders borrowed and built, banks lent to anyone who could walk and chew gum, too many houses remained unsold and unwanted and unaffordable. There was no market to support all the construction activity that was fueled by cheap and easy credit. If more people cared, they might have seen it coming.

But, as they say, hindsight is always 20-20.

There is no shame and no discredit in being asked to be a witness at a trial. If a victim is asked to testify at a trial that makes the victim a suspect? Is a witness considered guilty by Bulgarian standards?

"Most of the time, they give politics little attention, but when something really goes wrong, heads roll."

You could say this about many other things in addition to politics. The financial crisis comes to mind. No one cared that banks were engaging in creative accounting practices until things went terribly wrong. By then it is too late and no amount of heads rolling will help to get us back to correct principles.

"Toto, I've a Feeling We Are Not in EU Any More"

Actually, as far as Bulgaria is concerned:"Toto, I've a Feeling We Are Not Yet in the EU". All EU restrictions on Bulgarians will be lifted by 2014.

"Relatively few Americans care about politics at all."

What do Americans care about?

Bulgarians don't care enough about politics to vote, but politics is a spectator sport and everyone has an opinion.
