"Bulgaria and Cuba and the Ukraine just to see what a long term exposure to socialism and communism can do to a place..."

Nellie you know very well that they will draw the wrong conclusions, right?
People find facts to justify their feelings.
First Cuba is very different.
For Cuba they will say: see, that's what the US embargo has done!
For Bulgaria: see, that's what unrestrained Capitalism has done!

I guess I have to be exact here:
I was only talking about industry and means of production.

Also rental property was nationalized, - apartments and such - in time.

Exactly my point!
Don't come to Bulgaria!
Especially Americans! Not only does that lead to even greater commercializing, but we also have to look at their fat asses, which really ruins the sinory for all....

"What led to the fall of the British empire?"

Different animal altogether.
Hitler had a lot to do with it, in the way he drove UK to the poor house, but basically yes- financial problems.

True.
Perhaps he is paving the way for a bunch of black presidents in the future, and of course we all know that many black folks have Washington as a last name;)

I didn't say tomorrow, you know.
It took Rome 200 years of convulsions - I give it 20 in today's speed;)

"The structural problem is exactly that culture of gorging and consumption and greed and debt that led banks to over-leverage."

Culture is not a structural problem.
Greed is human nature.
Structural problem is when a system takes no account for human nature.
Tax deductible interest payment isn't a cultural, but structural problem.
Don't act like a housewife on a PMS rampage - think!

"Overeating is the problem that leads to the symptom of obesity a.k.a. FAT"
Overeating is also a symptom of psychological and/or physical problems.

"In 1989 ownership got rolled back to pre-1947 status. Right?"

Not.
Not until the mid - 90's there was a serious attempt to restitute property and not really industrial facilities, most of which were not existing in 1947 any way.
Who owned Stomana or Kremikovci? (extreme examples) in 1947?.
It had to find owners, and usually those who were better connected and more ruthless, got them.
Would it be different in the UK, under the same conditions, is my point.
I think not. All humans are made from the same mud (God).
