The Turkish government led by PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially requested Patriot missiles from NATO to be deployed along its border with Syria.
The missiles, Turkey says, are to be used only defensively in case of a spill over of the Syrian civil war acros the border.
According to NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the move is bound to have a beneficial effect on security in the region....
The Russians should have realised that their inertia, or perceived inertia, would lead to things being taken out of their hands, they should have been and be seen to have been far more pro-active in their dealings over Syria. Let's be honest as well, their objections are as much about not wanting these missiles on their doorstep as it is over its (proclaimed) concern for Syria. If you can't play ball by the same rules as all the others on the bloc don't complain when the game goes away from you.
