Sofia Warns of Terrorism Creeping toward Balkans

The threat of terrorism is quite obvious on the Balkans given the fact that there are many Islamic communities here among which terrorism could find friendly startup, according to Bulgaria's Secretary of the Interior Ministry.

Lieutenant-General Boyko Borisov inaugurated Thursday in Sofia an international police conference dedicated to regional police cooperation in times of globalization of terrorism and organized crime.

Unlike in the past, nowadays terrorism is capable of inflicting tremendous disasters, Interior Minister Georgi Petkanov addressed the forum participants coming from countries such as Germany, Albania, Bosna and Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey. This reality poses higher standards to the national security and public order services, he also said.

Lieut.-Gen. Borissov pointed out that terrorism is a threat to civilization, world peace and security with enlarging mire perspectives of terrorism uniting with the weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and nuclear ones.

He has stressed on the fact that Bulgaria has already contact officers deployed in almost all European capitals to enforce the measures of the EU Action Plan against Terrorism envisioning joint efforts in the fight against terrorist and organized criminal groups.

The international conference was attended also by Michael Clark who will be chief of the Sofia-based office of FBI for three years.
