Bulgarian Ethnic Turkish Party Demands International Probe in Attack against Dogan
The leadership of Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, will demand an international probe in the attack on the life of Ahmed Dogan, Bulgarian ethnic Turkish leader and DPS honorary Chairman.
The statement was made by the new leader of DPS, Lyutvi Mestan, at the official emergency press conference of the party in the capital Sofia Sunday afternoon.
"The main goal of the investigation would be to focus on finding out who was the political mastermind of this attack. The authorities are working on the lead that this was an individual action of a criminal. We know why this is being done; we know that this is a huge stain on Bulgaria's image. We are alarmed as are all institutions in the country, but we will not erase the stain by replacing the truth, but by revealing the truth. I strongly doubt that this would be of the competency and strength of Bulgarian authorities," Mestan said outraged.
The DPS leader accused people in power in Bulgaria and particularly Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, of making the case purely ethnic by bringing to the forefront the ethnic background of the perpetrator.
He stressed the party wished for the authorities to preserve the man's health and life, adding the ethnic Turks were the most interested in this to happen since the attacker was the only person to reveal the face of the dark political forces that plotted Dogan's murder.
On Saturday, police in Bulgaria detained a man after he pointed a gun at Dogan as he was delivering a speech in the capital Sofia. No shots were fired. The man was identified as Oktay Enimehmedov, a 25-year-old ethnic Turkish resident of the city of Burgas, with a previous criminal record for assault and theft.
At the press conference, Mestan labeled the intentions of the investigation to probe for battery delegates at the party's caucus "cynical," stressing they were the ones to successfully fight off a potential killer and to save the life of their leader.
He underscored these delegates must be congratulated for their courage and for doing the job of the police who took an hour and a half after the attack to arrive at the scene of the incident.
At the beginning of the conference, Mestan voiced outrage from the shift of focus regarding the murder attempt and attempts to present it as an individual act of a man who only wanted his moment of glory.
