UN: 60,000 Killed in Syria Civil War
More than 60,000 people have lost their lives since the start of unrest in Syria in March 2011, according to United Nationa estimates.
Wednesday UN Human Rights Commissioner Navanethem Pillay said that the UN has compiled a list with the names of 59,648 people confirmed to have been killed up to November 30, 2012.
"Given there has been no letup in the conflict since the end of November, we can assume that more than 60,000 people have been killed by the beginning of 2013," Pillay added.
"The number of casualties is much higher than we expected, and is truly shocking," stated the UN official.
She called on the international community, in particular the UN Security Council, to take up more resolute measures to stop the loss of life in Syria.
