Mediocrities with huge salaries, latter-day Roman senators with lavish expenses.

This is how the average Bulgarian perceives the country's members of the European Parliament, despite the inroads that pompous and politically correct terms have made in people's everyday speech.

Even though millions of families across Europe had their incomes squeezed last year, the biggest discrepancy was in Bulgaria, where the average wage was less than a twentieth of the salary of an MEP.

The salary may not be be huge, but their expenses are. In fact they probably earn more from their expenses than their salaries.

This seems to be the norm for all politicians of every party in every country. They preach austerity and restraint to their ordinary citizens while voting themselves (sometimes massive) pay rises

6000 euro a month is not a huge salary in the western world you know....
