Austria is a traditional holiday destination for well-heeled Bulgarians. In Bulgaria however Austrian tourists are rare species, most often seeking a bargain and a binge. Could the Balkan country change from bogan to boutique to attract more?
On or off the beaten track
"Legend has it that when God handed out land to different peoples, he forgot about the Bulgarians. To set things right, he took a piece of paradise and gave it to them."...
Well said. Bulgaria also has 100s of kilometres of tracks suitable for walking in some of Europe's most beautiful scenery; a would-be attraction for older cash-strapped EU members. So often though, small villages and towns are let down by a complete indifference to tourists and tourist facilities, almost as though the inhabitants feel diminished by outsiders wanting to give them money for a comfy bed and a decent meal. Instead of looking inwards, local communities should invest in tourist facilities; and seek advice from other EU countries which have well-organised tourist industries This would repay itself handsomely.
