Commenting article: Bulgaria's Plovdiv Named World's Sixth Oldest City

British archaeologists have proclaimed the second-largest city in Bulgaria, Plovdiv, to be the sixth oldest city in the world.

Plovdiv shares the sixth spot in the ranking, compiled by the British The Daily Telegraph, together with Faiyum in Egypt and Sidon in Lebanon.

The article points out that the earliest inhabitation in Plovdiv dates back to 4,000 BC. The city was originally a Tracian settlement before becoming a major Roman city. It later fell into Byzantine and Ottoman hands, before becoming part of Bulgaria.

Well, I think the point is that these are the oldest continually inhabited cities. But I also wonder about the accuracy of the whole article.

Yeah, I came across this as well yesterday. Obviously someone has a grudge. All the other cities have beautiful scenic photos and plovdiv has the local Neo Nazis marching past a construction site...

Sure! The Mesopotamian cities (and other Ionian, Aegean, Cretan etc.) came much later.

So why is there a photo of the Bulgarian Village Blackshirts?....couldn't they find a nice one of the ampitheartre? Who puts up theses pictures...? Miro from Klizma?
