"Overeating is also a symptom of psychological and/or physical problems."

No. What you call psychological problems is gluttony and no self-discipline to say "no" to that next delicious morsel that goes into your mouth. Some people are not good at self-regulation and have no self-discipline. Usually it is the people who have been regulated externally for years by parents, society, educational system, the wife, the mother, the Church, God, the Devil..................

"Culture is not a structural problem."

I did not say culture, I said culture of gorging.

"Greed is human nature."

Agreed. Greed is good.

"Structural problem is when a system takes no account for human nature."

Agreed

"Tax deductible interest payment isn't a cultural, but structural problem."

It is not a problem, it is the reason why everyone who has taxes deducted from his paycheck wants to own a house. Owning a house is a good thing.

The structural problem is when your salary is 4000/month and your house payment is 2500/month and is going up after 3 years to 5000/month. You should not be buying such a house, and the bank should not let you take out that kind of loan.

"Don't act like a housewife on a PMS rampage - think!"

I will pretend that I am a lady and ignore that last remark. lol

True.
Perhaps he is paving the way for a bunch of black presidents in the future, and of course we all know that many black folks have Washington as a last name;)

I didn't say tomorrow, you know.
It took Rome 200 years of convulsions - I give it 20 in today's speed;)

"The structural problem is exactly that culture of gorging and consumption and greed and debt that led banks to over-leverage."

Culture is not a structural problem.
Greed is human nature.
Structural problem is when a system takes no account for human nature.
Tax deductible interest payment isn't a cultural, but structural problem.
Don't act like a housewife on a PMS rampage - think!

"Overeating is the problem that leads to the symptom of obesity a.k.a. FAT"
Overeating is also a symptom of psychological and/or physical problems.

kolega

"Look, US's economy is designed to consume - very low penalty for consuming, and very high penalty for investing/saving.
Getting in debt is encouraged by the tax code, and the over-leveraging is on every level including the government"

You just proved my point. The structural problem is exactly that culture of gorging and consumption and greed and debt that led banks to over-leverage. And that's why you can't fix it by spending even more. You have to bite the bullet and stop borrowing and spending if you want to get out of debt. Let the bad businesses fail, let the good ones prevail, let the market do its job.

"Over leveraging IS a structural problem, dude!"

Is overeating a problem or a symptom?
Look, US's economy is designed to consume - very low penalty for consuming, and very high penalty for investing/saving.
Getting in debt is encouraged by the tax code, and the over-leveraging is on every level including the government - I am not gonna educate you... obviously.

kolega,

You know something? By your logic, it is not the end of the US yet, since the first US president was Washington and O-bambi is no Washington. lol.

OK, genius, what is that proverbial "structural problem"? Most hot shot economists agree it has to do with over leveraging. Do you even know what that means? It means you are borrowed up the kazoo and your bank is lending 30 times more money than it actually has to lend. Structural problems? Over leveraging IS a structural problem, dude!

"The cause it over leveraging - that's the illness. The result is the recession - that's the symptom."

Yeah you can oversimplify if you like.
What's the cause for over-leveraging then?
Don't tell me some some human traits, because that would be a housewife's logic.
There is a structural problem that will not be addressed, precisely because most are deaf to it, the way you are...

"What is going to lead to loss of revenue is people are not spending, businesses are not spending, jobs are being lost."
Ti go krushtavash, to purdi...
that's the symptoms Nellie, not the illness...

"I thought it was the size of the empire and the lack of fast and easy communications."

Nellie don't be a cow - that would qualify under "with 5th century technology, organizational and political structure" wouldn't it.

Wanna know something curious?
The last western Roman Emperor was named Romulus Augustulus (little Augustus), deposed in September 476.
That is funny, because he has the same name as the founder of Rome and of the first Roman Emperor.

The last Ottoman Sultan, deposed in 1922, was named Mehmed VI - namesake of Mehmed the Conqueror, who captured Constantinople on May 29, 1453, and was the fecto the founder of the Ottoman Empire.
