Small business long distance

Before knowing how to bring out the entrepreneur in you, it is necessary to know, why to bring out the entrepreneur in you. And for this it is advisable to have knowledge about what is happening around you. It is well known that besides so many other problems, the two main problems; viz, unemployment and over population are in the forefront, needing immediate attention of all the concerned in almost all the countries in the world. These two problems are supplementary and complementary to each other.

To solve the unemployment problem, two solutions are possible. Firstly, to get employed by somebody, may be, by Government or other establishments. Secondly, to get self- employed. While in the former, the opportunities are limited and no addition to GNP of the country takes place, in the latter the opportunities are unlimited besides the addition in the GNP of the country. So, to implement the second proposition, one has to promote entrepreneurs for self-employment and this answers the question, why to bring out the entrepreneur in you

Next question is how to do it Generally, it is believed that just like other professions like Medical, Technical and Legal etc; entrepreneurship also is a profession. Further, it is a fact that nobody was born as professionals. To become a professional one has to possess certain relevant virtues or one has to try to acquire same; if not possessing the same already. There is no exception for this, in the case of entrepreneurship also; i.e. entrepreneur can be created by making one to acquire the specific relevant characteristics of that profession. These types of persons are called First Generation Entrepreneurs. Further, as a result of recent research results, London Business School believes that genes could have an impact on personality traits and abilities that can influence factors involved in people becoming entrepreneurs.

Having agreed that entrepreneurs can be created; now it becomes necessary to know what entrepreneurship is and what are the specific characteristics that are to be acquired by you, if you are not already in possession of the same.

Though there are number of definitions and explanations given for entrepreneurship, the one given by Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, ex prime Minister of India is very lucid and comprehensive. It goes like this:

Entrepreneurship may be defined as an ability to take risk, act and assume responsibility. An entrepreneur creates opportunities not only for one self but also for others and serves the nation as a whole.

Now, let us try to know the specific characteristics of an entrepreneur. Though there are many such characteristics, the following are considered to be very important universally.

A strong desire to be a winner (Need to achieve)

Quality of stick-to-it (Perseverance)

Preference to middle- of the road strategy when one has analyzed a risky problem objectively and think one can solve it. Entrepreneurs are not gamblers. Further, risk without understanding is useless; but there is no life without risk (Moderate risk taken).

Alertness to opportunities, seizing and converting them to ones advantage. (Ability to find and explore opportunities)

Un-affected by personal likes and dislikes while approaching the problems (Analytical ability.)

Being conscious of one is doing when he or she is working on a goal or a task (Using feed back)

Welcome to tackle an unfamiliar but interesting situation (Facing uncertainty)

Dislike for working for others (Independence)

Flexible in taking decisions (Flexibility)

Thinking ahead, planning future and then work to make it come to (Planner)

Feeling comfortable while dealing with people at all levels (Inter-personal skills)

Ability to encourage others (Motivator)

Capable of working for long hours and tackling different problems at the same time. Difficulties are there to rouse not discourage. (Stress taker)

Awareness of self (Possession of self concept)

Quality of thinking ahead (Orientation to future)

In practice no entrepreneur has all the above mentioned qualities. But most of them will have many. So the first step for a person aspiring for entrepreneurship is to make inventory of all the traits he possesses. This self-awareness and analysis will help to determine ones strengths and help overcome ones weaknesses to become a good entrepreneur. For entrepreneurs with the desired characteristics, there will not be any problem in getting help for procuring various requisites like land, building, technology, machinery and equipment, finance and marketing etc. for starting enterprises because all the concerned agencies will be very eager to help the prospective good entrepreneur to see that he/she is self-employed, since in the process, the problem of unemployment will also be mitigated at least to some extent. Almost all the countries in the world established the relevant agencies to provide the desired service in this regard.

In conclusion, it may be stated that it's true; there are a lot of reasons not to start your own business. But for the right person, the following advantages of business ownership far outweigh the risks.

You get to be your own boss.

Hard work and long hours directly benefit you, rather than increasing profits for someone.

Earning and growth potential are far less limited.

A new venture is exciting.

Running a business will provide endless variety, challenge and opportunities to learn.

So, after bringing out the entrepreneur in you, the only task that you have to do is to decide what to do, dedicate yourself to what you have thought of doing and act in a disciplined way to accomplish the task. Then success cannot go to anyone else except to you only and only to you.
