To buy upgrades online, one simply needs to login to A.com with his Advantage number and password. One needs to be sure that his contact information includes a valid phone number which is required for purchase. If one needs to update his phone number, it's very easy. First, go to 'My Account' then select "Contact Information". Next, go to the Advantage section and select on "Buy Upgrades".

Each electronic upgrade is valid for 500 miles of travel on American Airlines within and between the 50 United States, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and between the U.S. and Central America.
Elite Status Advantage members may use upgrades for themselves and one travel companion on a paid Economy Class ticket, while all other Advantage members may use upgrades only for themselves on a paid Full-fare Economy Class (fares booked in Y or B) ticket.
One needs to remember that upgrades will be available for use within two hours of purchase, but will not be viewable on A.com until the following day.
