At a special ceremony on Tuesday, Bulgaria's State Commission on Information Security awarded some of the leading media in the country over their contribution to covering the issue of data protection in 2008.

The first private national radio Darik grabbed a honorary diploma for its ability to inform the society for the body's activities.

The award was handed to the radio's owner, Mr. Radosvet Radev, by the commission's Chair Tsveta Markova.

Among the other media distinguished at the ceremony were the Bulgarian National Television, the Bulgarian News Agency and the dailies Trud, 24 Chasa and Standart.

A total of seven reporters received individual diplomas as a sign of acknowledgement for their work in the sphere of information security.

"These awards come as a result of our joint efforts to inform the people about the activities of the secret services and the way they influence the system for protection of classified data," Mrs. Markova said.

"We must not stop making such news public," he added.
