More than 1,500 citizens of Bulgaria's town of Sliven staged Saturday a mourning rally to mark the ninth day since the murder of the 20-year-old pharmacy student, who was beaten to death by his coevals in Sofia's Studentski grad quarter.

Family, relatives, friends and teachers went along the main street in the town bringing wreaths, candles and posters with Stoyan Baltov's photos.

The crowd then reached the central Hadzhi Dimitar Square to fall on their knees in memory of the killed youngsters.

"All of the attackers of my son must face court. His body was all covered with make-up so that the signs of violence could not be seen," said the inconsolable Stoyan's mother.

"If the Bulgarian judges try to cover up the case, I will go to Strasburg," she added.

The relatives and ex-schoolmates of the victim demanded life sentences to be given to the killers.

"Stoyan did not even talk to fools but he was murdered by such people. All of them are absolute killers," the boy's mother said addressing the mourners.

A day earlier, Bulgarian university students and professors gathered at a peaceful rally in Sofia's quarter Studentski Grad to protest against violence in the district.

Baltov was beaten to death by a group of drunk boys in front of the Amnesia Disco on December 5, who attacked him and a friend of his without warning and for no apparent reason.

Sofia's quarter Studentski Grad ("Student's Town") is comprised mostly of student dormitories, where about 50 000 university students from various higher education institutions in Sofia live during the academic year.

The President of Sofia University Prof. Ivan Ilchev, and the President of the Medical University of Sofia Prof. Vanyo Mitev also joined the rally.

The protesters handed to the Mayor of Studentska Municipaliy Dimitar Dilchev a statement demanding a fair trial against Stoyan's murderers, and tougher security measures in the quarter.

One of the organizers, Adriana Ivanova, emphasized that if their demands were not met by Tuesday, their protest rallies are set to continue.

A total of five suspects have been arrested for Stoyan's murder in the day after the incident occurred. All but one were almost immediately released, and only one of those released was imposed a BGN 500 bail. The fifth suspect remains behind bars as the investigation continues.
