More than 1 000 Bulgarian university students and professors gathered at a peaceful rally in Sofia's quarter Studentski Grad to protest against the murder of the 20-year-old pharmacy student Stoyan Baltov.

Baltov was beaten to death by a group of drunk boys in front of the Amenesia Disco in Studentski Grad on December 5, who attacked him and a friend of his without warning and for no apparent reason.

Sofia's quarter Studentski Grad ("Student's Town") is comprised mostly of student dormitories, where about 50 000 university students from various higher education institutions in Sofia live during the academic year.

The President of Sofia University Prof. Ivan Ilchev, and the President of the Medical University of Sofia Prof. Vanyo Mitev also joined the rally.

The protesters handed to the Mayor of Studentska Municipaliy Dimitar Dilchev a statement demanding a fair trial against Stoyan's murderers, and tougher security measures in the quarter.

The demands were tabled on behalf of the Association for Development and Public Control of the Students' Dormitories and Cafeterias, which was among the organizers of Friday's rally.

Adriana Ivanova from the Association emphasized that if their demands were not met by Tuesday, their protest rallies are set to continue.

A total of five suspects have been arrested for Stoyan's murder in the day after the incident occurred. All but one were almost immediately released, and only one of those released was imposed a BGN 500 bail. The fifth suspect remains behind bars as the investigation continues.
