Bulgaria Pharmacy Student Murder Triggers Heated Death Penalty Discussions

A heated discussion about reintroducing the dead penalty has began on the internet in Bulgaria since Wednesday.

The discussion was triggered by the December 5 murder of 20-year-old pharmacy student Stoyan Baltov, who was killed in a drunken fight in front of a disco club in the capital's quarter Studentski Grad.

Most of Sofia's college dormitories are also located in Studentski Grad (Student Town).

The discussion began the day of Stoyan's funeral - Wednesday, December 10. The link to the site collecting signatures for the death penalty is spreading quickly all over Bulgaria via Skype.

Over 360 signatures have been collected so far in support of the death penalty at the rate of 80 signatures per hour. Bulgarians living abroad have also signed the petition.

"In Stoyan's memory we appeal for the reinstatement of the death penalty for murder and the clear distinction between alcohol abuse and insanity, as a factor in the commitment of such irreversible act. We want real action, full objectivity and serious punishment for all participants in the beating. A life sentence is not enough in this case. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a a tooth, a life for a life! For those without consciousness, for the hands stained with blood, for those who ignore God's will not to kill," the petition reads.
