Bulgarian Clergy Lifts Ban on Building on Church Lands

Society | December 9, 2008, Tuesday // 00:00

The delegates from the sixth national convention of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church have decided Tuesday to allow construction works on church and monastery lands.

During the previous session of the convention held in October such activities have been banned.

"It was explained that the church would lose or at least not benefit if the ban came into force," the spokesman for the Supreme Church Forum, father Anguel Anguelov, said.

"The plots to be built will remain property of the church and the constructions will be used by the church after the agreement with the investor expires," he added.

Granting construction rights is one of the so called consolidated texts of the church regulations prepared by legal officials and eparchies' bishops.
