EC Director for Enlargement Michael Lee arrives Monday in Sofia to give Bulgarian Deputy PM Meglena Plugchieva detailed explanation about the blocking of EUR 220M of EU funding.
The meeting was initiated by Mr Lee after Plugchieva nearly accused the EC of not providing clear arguments for blocking the PHARE funds for Bulgaria.
"I do not consider this a supportive and constructive approach. We have not reached the maximum. But I am asking - which EU country is free of corruption and has solved all its problems, especially now, when the world is shaken by the global financial crisis," Plugchieva had previously said.
After Plugchieva's comments last week, the EC immediately sent a letter, revealing shocking details about violations with EU funding in Bulgaria. It was reported that only one of 35 PHARE projects was correctly implemented, while the rest severely violated procedures.
