Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev commented on the decision of the European Commission to deprive Bulgaria of EUR 520 M of PHARE funds by saying that sometimes the institutions in Brussels were unfair to his country.

The Prime Minister alluded to double standards in the EU by stating that Bulgaria was not treated the same way as the other members of the Union were, because the problems in his country, including corruption, were not different from the issues in the other EU states.

"The signs that our country is not treated as the other EU members are might lead to considerable political risks in Bulgaria's domestic politics", Stanishev warned.

He made these comments before German MPs and businessmen during the Second Parliamentary Evening of Germany's Eastern Economic Commission.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister also explained the first two years of Bulgaria's EU membership had been marked by the constant efforts of institutions, society, and all Bulgarian citizens for the modernization, and the reforming of the country.

In his words, these intensive efforts were already producing the desired results.
