The Bulgarian member of the European Parliament (EP) from the European socialists' quota, Evgeny Kirilov is going to notify the European Audit Office regarding the way the European Commission's (EC) General Enlargement Directorate had approved projects at the time of Bulgaria's European Union (EU) accession.
Kirilov spoke on Tuesday in special interview before the Darik radio, voicing his disappointment of the EC decision to irrevocably take away from Bulgaria EUR 520 M of EU PHARE Program funds and its refusal to restore the accreditation of two of Bulgaria's PHARE executive agencies over fraud concerns.
"The EC General Enlargement Directorate deals with negotiations and assessment of countries candidate members of the EU. However, they continue to look at us as a candidate member not as a full-pledged member. We are at a stage when we need a frank talk bout how did the Directorate act when they adopted and signed the PHARE projects. We further need to ask the European Audit Office to assess the methods used by them when Bulgaria did not have the possibility of endorsing its own projects," Kirilov stated in the interview.
The European MP also said that due to the upcoming European Parliamentary elections next year, some high level European officers have chosen Bulgaria as a target so that they could demonstrate their irreconcilability with fraud and their strictness.
