The Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" is to give an award, amounting at BGN 10,000 for special scientific contributions as a part of the celebrations, which are to mark the institution's 120th anniversary.

The celebrations that will be held under the motto "120 Years of Secondary Education in Bulgaria" are to officially begin on Sunday.
The festive program includes a series of scientific, cultural and publishing events, conferences, mask ball, live music performances among them.

Special guests during the celebrations will be 70 rectors and professors from Bulgaria and abroad.

The President of the University, professor Ivan Ilchev announced that the school has spent over BGN 8 M in renovations recently.

The cultural agenda is titled "The Seven Arts Visit Sofia University" with many renowned writers, artists, dancers, moviemakers, musicians and designers to visit the school.

The agenda of the celebrations is published on the University's website - www.portal.uni-sofia.bg. The site is also going to download monthly a videotaped speech of the University's President giving an account of the school's achievements and problems.


The 120th anniversary celebrations are going to culminate on November 24, the official day of the University with a solemn march and laying of wreaths in downtown Sofia.

Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, capital's Mayor Boyko Borisov, the Parliamentary Speaker Georgi Pirinski, Education Minister Daniel Valchev, Culture Minister Stefan Danailov and MPs will also join the procession.

It will stop at the National Theater building, where a concert is going to be held.

The march will resume after the concert and will go through the Sofia theaters located on "Rakovski" street.
