17 Cases of EU Funds Abuse Investigated by Bulgaria Special Unit

The special unit at the Bulgarian National Investigation Services has initiated 17 preliminary legal proceedings over the abuse of European funds, Prosecutor Bozhidar Dzhambazov reported on Thursday.

Dzhambazov, along with the Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Plugchieva and Justice Minister Miglena Tacheva visited the unit to learn about the progress in their work.

According to Dzhambazov each of the cases involved abuse of funds and damages costing millions of EUR. Most of the signals have been received from the European Union (EU) Anti-Fraud Office OLAF .

During the visit Stanishev stated the proceedings were not just a campaign that was supposed to last from August to December, but part of the systematic and serious efforts to deal with the abuse of EU funds in Bulgaria.
