The European Union adopted its first ever operation to combat the pirates' actions in Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, the block's presidency announced Monday.
The operation, which will be held under the code name of Eunavfor Atalanta, was officially accepted by the member-states' defense ministers during their meeting in Brussels.
It will be launched in December in the region of the Horn of Africa and will be commanded by the British Vice-admiral Philip Jones.
The head quarter is to be located in the town of Northwood in the United Kingdom.
In the mid September, EU founded a coordination unit, which is now operating with two French frigates and a Spanish patrol plane.
