The captain of the Bulgarian national men's volleyball team Plamen Konstantinov has been selected Bulgaria's "Man of the Year 2008" through an online voting campaign with the participation of some 20 000 people.
Konstantinov beat the Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, who remained second. The Bulgarian film director Yavor Gardev was ranked third.
The captain of the Bulgarian men's volleyball team said he was a little surprised by the fact he triumphed over Berbatov.
Since the start of his career in 1986, Konstantinov has won the championship titles of Bulgaria with Levski and Slavia; of Greece - with Aris, Iraklis, Olimpiakos, and Panatinaikos; of France - with Tours.
Konstantinov also has two bronze medals with the Bulgarian national men's team - from the 2006 World Championship in Japan, and from the 2007 World Cup in Japan. He is presently a player of Iraklis, Thessaloniki.
Bulgaria's 2008 "Men of the Year" campaign was administered for the first time by the private Darik Radio, and for the first time it has its own web site at manoftheyear.bg.
The official award ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 2 in the Military Club in Sofia.
