"Travelling classroom - Earth Balloon" - an interactive training programme in social science, natural sciences and environmental protection "arrived" in Bulgaria's town of Galabovo on Monday at the invitation of the US energy company AES.

More than 450 children gathered in the "balloon" to get some new knowledge over important environmental issues such as water, soil and air pollution, climate changes and biodiversity loss.

"I am happy that once again we have the opportunity within our social responsibility campaign to implement such a large-scale, interesting and entertaining project," said Peter Lithgow, the company's country manager for Bulgaria.

"I believe that this initiative will be a step forward to a new understanding of the environment and of the importance to save and appreciate the natural resources," he added.

The classroom is a model of the terrestrial globe based on satellite shots. It comprises of two parts - an inflated vinyl globe and a fan.

A partner of AES in project's development is "Time-Ecoprojects" Foundation, the originator of the classroom, funded under the "Europe" 2000 Programme of the European Commission.
