Bulgaria marked Friday International Black Sea Action Day, which commemorates the signing of the Black Sea Strategic Action Plan on October 31, 1996.

The document provides a framework for cooperation among the Black Sea states, and stands for the commitment on part of the governments in the region to make efforts to preserve and restore the environmental balance in the Black Sea.

The Black Sea Strategic Action Plan defines the policy measures, actions, and timetables required to achieve the environmental objectives of the Bucharest Convention, which was signed by the six Black Sea states - Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and the Ukraine - in 1992.

The coastal regions of the Black Sea are inhabited by over sixteen million people.
